Post Summary
Applications are invited for a Research Fellow post in 20th century Ukrainian studies (the Soviet period) for two years, starting in September 2016. The post will be linked to the Horizon2020 project Cultural Opposition: Understanding the Cultural Heritage of Dissent in the Former Socialist Countries (COURAGE), and it will be based in the Department of Russian and Slavonic Studies. The person appointed will work under the supervision of Dr Balázs Apor, the National Task Manager of COURAGE in Ireland.

Details of the Post
COURAGE is a three-year research project funded under the European Commission’s
Horizon2020 scheme. The project is coordinated by the Institute of History at the
Hungarian Academy of Sciences in Budapest, and it involves 11 partner institutions, including TCD. The aim of the project is to create an electronic registry of collections—public and private—of cultural opposition in the former socialist countries, and to study their significance in the shaping of the social, cultural and political landscape of Central and Eastern Europe. The role of TCD is to identify, explore and describe collections related to cultural opposition movements in the Ukraine, and to identify similar collections in Russian emigre communities.

The main objectives of COURAGE include
1. the creation of an online database of collections in the original languages and in English;
2. the creation of descriptions of, and guides to the collections in order to advance further research;
3. the compilation of a handbook on the different types of cultural opposition represented by the collections;
4. the development of online curricula for educational purposes;
5. the organization of dissemination events in the respective countries promoting collections (documentary film festival, exhibitions and other media events).

Standard duties and Responsibilities of the Post
1. Identify collections of cultural opposition in the Ukraine.
2. Identify some of the most representative collections of Russian and Ukrainian emigre communities.
3. Collect content of online and offline collections with the help of a computer software.
4. Collect information about the collections in the Ukraine using various methods. (The suggested methods will be outlined in the interview guidelines prepared by the research Consortium at a later stage.)
5. Input the relevant data into the project’s database in Ukrainian, Russian (if applicable) and in English.
6. Contribute to the organisation of dissemination events in the Ukraine or at TCD. This may include the organisation of short training seminars for the stakeholders of the relevant collections.
7. Participate at Consortium meetings.

Person Specification

• Applicants should have an excellent academic record and have completed a PhD or equivalent in a related discipline (history, cultural studies, sociology, etc.) Essential.

• Applicants should have extensive research experience in Communism studies and the history of Soviet Ukraine. They should have native or near-native competence in Ukrainian, Russian and English, and they should be able to demonstrate the ability to conduct research activities in those languages. Applicants should be highly motivated, possess excellent communicational as well as organisational skills, and should be able to work effectively as a member of a team.

• Preference may be given to candidates whose research experience includes the cultural or social history of dissent and opposition to the Communist regime in Soviet Ukraine. Preference may also be given to applicants whose expertise includes archival collections, and/or metadata schemas and information systems. Applications from female candidates are particularly encouraged in line with COURAGE’s recruitment guidelines.
